Who needs the Proxy Server (remote access from non-adjacent counties and abroad)
The proxy server is essential to those remote users who need access to the Library's electronic resources (databases, electronic journals, electronic books, PSEPHEDA) from a computer that is not connected to the University’s intranet. For example, if your computer at home connects to the Internet via a third-party Internet Service Provider (e.g. COSMOTE, FORTHNET, VODAFONE, etc) then, in order to access the services to which the Library has a subscription, the proxy server must be used.

However, the proxy server should only be used for accessing the Library's electronic resources. In order to preserve the Library's network and computing resources, the proxy server's configuration does not allow its use for general Internet browsing and as a result it restricts many of the traditional Internet services, such as file downloading, e-mail, chat, etc. For general Web browsing the settings mentioned below should be removed from your browser.

MICROSOFT/WINDOWS SYSTEMS

APPLE/MAC SYSTEMS

STEP 1: For those with Apple Mac laptops, the proxy server needs to be configured in the systems settings of their laptop. In order to access these settings, you must go to the system preferences by clicking on the "Apple Logo" and then selecting System Preferences....

 MAC-PROXY-1

STEP 2: In the system settings dialog window, please select the Network section

MAC-PROXY-2

STEP 3: Then, in the systems settings for the Network section, make sure that you are in the W-Fi section (top left) and click on Advanced... (bottom right)

MAC-PROXY-3

STEP 4: Then select the tab Proxies as shown in the image and make sure that the Web Proxy (HTTP) and Secure Web Proxy (HTTPS) are checked. In each of these two sections, fill-in the Web Proxy server entry with the following information:

  • 195.251.214.183
  • 3128 (after the ":") as shown in the image.

Make sure that this information is for both the Web Proxy (HTTP) and Secure Web Proxy (HTTPS) and are also checked. For convenience DO NOT put in your username and password in the form just yet. Click on OK.

MAC-PROXY-4

STEP 5: Then, click on Apply at the bottom right...

MAC-PROXY-5

STEP 6: And then go to the Apple Logo at the top right of your screen and select Restart...

That should be it!

If you are using Safari, open it and go to https://www.lib.uom.gr. You will be able to browse the Internet via our proxy server with Safari. However, if, when you open Safari it displays that the page is not accessible, or your laptop starts to ask additional permissions asking you to enter your MAC login, then you might have entered the wrong Institutional account credentials in STEP 8 above. In that case, you have to return to STEP 4, uncheck the Proxy Server requires password checkbox from both the Web Proxy (HTTP) and Secure Web Proxy (HTTPS) sections, click on OK, then click Apply as in STEP 5 and perform a restart (STEP 6), in order for the system to ask you again for your credentials (STEP 7). If you don't do that step, then the system will continuously be using the wrong credentials you entered. After the restart please enter your correct Institutional Account credentials in order to login.

If you are using Google Chrome in order to access the web, then when you start it go to https://www.lib.uom.gr/. Google Chrome may ask you again for your credentials, which is normal and you will enter them again in the Login Box as shown below. If again, this pop up box keeps poping up asking you to enter your credentials, even though you insert them, then you are using the wrong credentials for your Institutional Account.

MAC-PROXY-9

If you are not sure about your Institutional account credentials, you must contact the Computer Center Helpdesk at 2310891800 to guide you, in order to retrieve them.

For more information, please check the relevant link concerning information about your Institutional account. The Library and Information Center is not responsible for maintaining these accounts.
