PROJECT TITLE:  OPEN ACCESS SCHOLARLY E-CONTENT AT UOM: SUPPORTING LIBRARY SERVICES FOR ITS ORGANIZATION, PROMOTION, PUBLICATION & INTERCONNECTION

    SUMMARY OF PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The main aim of the project is the organization, promotion and production of digital scholarly content as it derives from the scientific activity of the Greek Academic and Research Community in the disciplines that the University of Macedonia treats.  A more specific objective is to support primarily the 'green road' (as well as the 'gold road') to open access to the research output of the University of Macedonia.  To achieve the above goals, the project provides for the restructuring and upgrading, and furthermore, for the development of new specialized supporting services, such as: a) the gathering, preservation and dissemination of the research output of the University in digital form (e.g. Institutional Repository), b) the e-publishing and managing of open access scholarly content (e.g. open access journals management and electronic publishing services, open access conference hosting service), c) the preservation of our cultural heritage (enrichment of the existing digital library of the University through the digitization of print Greek scientific collections of historical importance in economics and political sciences) and d) the provision of an interoperable library interface (based on open source software and open standards for metadata harvesting) which will interconnect all the above services and also, will provide to the users an extra common interface to search the web as well.  The effective implementation and sustainability of the project will be ensured by complementary actions, such as: a) the enhancement of the technological infrastructure of the Library, b) the development of value added services and c) the provision of documentation and information services.
