Open source software used in the University of Macedonia Library and Information Center

  • Reddo HelpDesk System

The Reddo HelpDesk System, is an open source software system for the support of an online helpdesk environment. It is aimed for the Linux operating system, is built with PHP and it uses the MySQL Database Management System for storing and archiving purposes.

The development version, aims to provide a simple, flexible and full featured helpdesk environments that will offer a simple and easy to install solution to anybody desiring a helpdesk environment.

It supports a user and an administrative interface, to pose and to manage questions respectively. Currently a lot of work has been done on the administrative interface, whereas the user interface will be enriched soon with personal environment and searching in the questions database. Soon an open source release version will be available on Sourceforge for download and installation.

Currently there is a running instance of the system, installed in the University of Macedonia, Economic and Social Sciences, serving students, staff and members of the University's Library on information questions.

  • SmILLe - System management Interlibrary Loan electronically

The new interlibrary loan system was developed by the Library & Information Center of University of Macedonia. The new system covers the users’ interlibrary loan needs and supports the interlibrary loan process not only between library and users but between libraries as well. The system has been designed by the protocol ISO ILL in the frame of Library & Information Center job. However it can be expanded to other job models. The system is under AFL(Academic Free License) license.

 

Joomla! Is a popular open source content management system for publishing content on the world wide web. Joomla! includes many advanced features such as:
•    Easy web page creation and editing
•    Document publication
•    Intuitive management of web forms

Moodle is an open source course management system. Moodle was used in the implementation of Telemathea, an asynchronous education environment that supports the teaching of foreign languages and seminars at the University of Macedonia.

The DSpace digital repository system captures, stores, indexes, preserves, and distributes digital research material. Dspace was used to implement Psepheda, digital library & institutional repository of the University of Macedonia. Dspace hosts digital content such as:
•    Scientific articles
•    Presentations
•    Theses

The Scout Portal Toolkit (SPT) allows groups or organizations that have a collection of knowledge or resources they want to share via the World Wide Web to put that collection online without making a big investment in technical resources or expertise. SPT was used to implement Thira, Thematic Index of Internet Resources of the University of Macedonia Library and Information Center.

  • Linux Terminal Server Project (LTSP)

Linux Terminal Server Project (LTSP) is an add-on package for Linux that allows many people to simultaneously use the same computer. LTSP was used as the operating system for University of Macedonia Library public terminals.

Linux is the primary operating system used in the majority of servers in the University of Macedonia Library and Information Center. The main Linux distributions used are:

  • Squid Proxy Server

Squid proxy server is used to provide access to IP based subscription services for users which are not connected to the local area network of the University of Macedonia.

Mediawiki is used as an internal documentation repository for the University of Macedonia Library and Information Center.
