Remote access
Case 1 - Proxy Server (remote access from non-adjacent counties and abroad)
The proxy server of the Library and Information Services of the University of Macedonia enables remote users to access the Library’s digital subscriptions.
Who needs the Proxy Server The proxy server is essential to those remote users who need access to the Library’s digital subscriptions from a computer that is not connected to the University’s intranet. For example, if your computer at home connects to the Internet via a third-party Internet Service Provider (e.g. OTE-net, ForthNet, HOL, etc) then, in order to access the services to which the Library has a subscription, the proxy server must be used.
However, the proxy server should only be used for accessing the Library's digital subscriptions. In order to preserve the Library's network and computing resources, the proxy server's configuration does not allow its use for general Internet browsing and as a result it restricts many of the traditional Internet services, such as file downloading, e-mail, chat, etc. For general Web browsing the settings mentioned below should be removed from your browser.

Technical Structure
Computers
In the Library there are 22 personal computers, which are offered for free use. Every one can search on the internet search engines, in the Library online catalog, in the electronic journals and databases, which are in the disposal of the users either through the Library's subscriptions or free on the Internet. Access to the electronic journals and databases is controlled by the computer IP addresses.
It is important to know that it's forbidden to save and print the whole text of the electronic journals issues or a big number of electronic journal articles that are disposed through the Library's services. Any violation of the above terms or any other kind of misuse will mean severe penalties to the users and the institution, which may lead to theinterruption of the Library access to the electronic journals and the rest of the electronic services.
It is also forbidden to send electronic mails, as well as all the chat services.
Photocopy machines
In the Library's entrance there are three photocopy machines for the users service. The machines operate with a 50 units card, that is 50 photocopies, which costs 1,50 euro. You can buy these cards from the automatic sales card, which stands next to the photocopy machines.
For the University faculty, a photocopy machine in the journal bookshelves area is in their disposal. Every member that is interested in obtaining the right to use this photocopy machine can fill in the relevant application and hand it in the Circulation Department. The limit for every user is 1200 photocopies per academic year.
We would like to remind you that, according to the current law for the Copyright and the relative rights, it is strictly forbidden to phocopy the whole book or issue-volume of a journal. It is only allowed to photocopy a small part of a work for a clearly private use of the person who photocopies it. That person is also responsible for the correct maintenance of the terms of the above legislation. In case of violation of the above terms or any other type of misuse severe punishments are foreseen for the violators.
