Interlibrary Loan
Interlibrary Loan is the procedure that libraries’ material becomes accessible from one library to another in order to meet the needs of their users...

Interlibrary Loan Print E-mail

Library offers to its users the possibility of ordering material (books, articles, theses, etc) from other libraries abroad.

  •  Library as a borrower
Everyone can use the ILL service, as long as he is an owner of the library card.

Through the interlibrary loan, Library has access to monographs, journal issues, thesis, microforms and photocopies of journal articles of other Libraries.

For better service, users have first of all to be sure that the material they want is not located in our Library. For this purpose, users can refer to the On-line Public Access Catalog (OPAC) and to the catalog of E-Journals at the www.lib.uom.gr.

Users must fill in the electronic ILL/Document Delivery request forms.

An average time of the materials receipt is 10 to 15 days by mail and until 2 days by fax or e-mail.

When the material arrives in the library, Circulation and ILL Department personnel inform the patron by e-mail, or phone.

If in 10 days from the date of the material’s arrival, the patron doesn’t come to receive it from the ILL Office, the material is returned to the owner Library.  In the meanwhile, the interested user is burdened with the charge of this order.

Patrons interested to be informed about the progress of their request can contact the Circulation and ILL Department personnel or send an e-mail at

The article photocopies do not need to be returned by the patron.

The patron can keep any other type of material up to 10 days. If he delays to receive the arrived material from the ILL Office, the time is lessened.

The Library can make a recall of an item in case the cooperated library or vendor asks for the material back.

In return
, the borrowed material has to be given exclusively to the Circulation and ILL Department personnel. The users are responsible for the good condition of the material they borrowed through the Interlibrary Loan. The library maintains the right to charge the user with the equivalent of the fine that might be imposed by the cooperated library for the ruin of the material that has been asked and used by the user. Read the InterLibrary Loan Policy as far as  the Library as a borrower is concerned (available only in greek).back to top

  • Library as a supplier

All the libraries have the right to use ILL and Document Delivery services as long as they accept and respect the Interlibrary Loan policy of the Library.

Material that cannot be supplied (available only in greek).

The Library, considering the time of transportation, loans the material for 28 working days.

The Library that has made the request has to inform the Circulation and ILL Department for the arrival of the material. Libraries can use the electronic ILL/Document Delivery request form for sending their requests. They can also use fax and email for that purpose.

As a non-profit organization, the Library does not charge for the Interlibrary Loan Service. The only expense for the borrower institution is the cost of the courier that the institution selects. In case of delay, fine is imposed. The fine is 0,50 € for each working day. In case of ruin or loss of the material, the borrower institution has to replace the material or to pay 1,5 times the current value of the item.

The library maintains the right to recall the material. Extension of the loan period is possible only if the borrower institution informs the Circulation and ILL Department 3 days before the end of the first loan period. The loaned material has to be returned in a safe way, according to the rules of “Interlibrary loan packaging and wrapping guidelines A.L.A.”

Read the InterLibrary Loan Policy as far as the Library as a supplier is concerned (available only in greek).

  • Charges for Interlibrary Loan service
For each request from foreign libraries and vendors, members of the University Campus (Professors, graduate and post-graduate students, etc.) are charged with the amount of 6€ (paid in advance), despite of the final cost. In case the final cost exceeds this amount, the rest of it is chargeable to the University.

On the contrary, non-affiliated members are charged entirely the final cost that is imposed by the cooperated library or vendor.

When a request comes to the Library, the Circulation and ILL Department personnel searches at the Union Catalogue of Journals of the Hellenic Science & Technology Libraries (27.000 titles from the collections of 233 libraries), developed from the National Documentation Centre (NDC). The prices for the order depends on the number of the pages that the specific article has. The table below includes the prices of NDC according to the pages.

In case that it is impossible for an article to be found in the NDC, the order is forwarded to the Gemeinsamer Bibliotheksverbund (SUBITO). SUBITO is an association of German academic and scientific libraries, covering a big part of bibliography in English language. The low prices of the services that SUBITO offers makes it the first choice among the foreign vendors. SUBITO charges our library with the prices given below.
